Balenciaga is a fashion house founded by Spanish Cristóbal Balenciaga in 1919.
He was referred to as "the master" by Christian Dior.
Cristobal Balenziaga opened his first boutique in San Sebastián, Spain in 1919 followed by shops in Madrid and Barcelona.
Balenciaga opened his Paris couture house on Avenue George V in August 1937. Balenciaga's success in Paris was nearly immediate.
In 1960, he designed the wedding dress for Queen Fabiola of Belgium. Jackie Kennedy famously upset John F. Kennedy for buying Balenciaga's expensive creations while he was President as they were to too lavish.
The House of Balenciaga is now owned by the French multinational company Kering.
