Heidemarie Jiline aka "Jil" Sander was born in 1943. She is a minimalist German fashion designer and the founder of the Jil Sander fashion house.
She founded her own fashion house in 1968 with her mother's sewing machine.
She subsequently flourished through the 1980s and 1990s, and soon achieved an international fame, thanks to retailers who opened Sander boutique on New York's Park Avenue and in London.
In 1999, Prada Group bought a 75% share in her company. Sander remained creative designer and became chairwoman in the new joint venture. In November 2004, Sander terminated cooperation with Prada.
In 2009, Sander announced the creation of her own fashion consultancy. The new company's first client was Fast Retailing of Japan with its Uniqlo label for whom Sander is overseeing the design of womenswear and menswear collections called J+ from 2009 to 2011.
+J returned to Uniqlo's store shelves and online shop for a Autumn/Winter 2014 and Spring/Summer 2015 "best of" collection, featuring selected previously designed pieces by the partnership.
